Context of Practice: Seminar 3 - Panopticism


  • Panopticon - building designed by Jeremy Bentham 1791 - political philosopher 
  • Designed perfectly for any use you use it for - maximum functionality
    • Being watched
    • Being alone - isolated
    • Constantly surveillance
    • Confinement
    • Psychological effect
    • Psychological discipline - not forced by physical abuse
  • Panopticism - modern forms of discipline through methods similar to the panopticon
    • new form of social control
      • eg. attendance monitoring 
    • self regulation
    • visibility - visible reminder of authority - cctv
    • the state is in control
  • The gaze - one way 
    • aware your always being look at
    • aren't able to gaze back
    • mass media has become a giant panopticon
    • self-fulfilling prophecy
    • institutional gaze
