" To a sponsored sportogtown and Z-Boys is a 2001 documentary film directed by Stacy Peralta. Using a mix of film the Zephyr skateboard team shot in the 1970s by Craig Stecyk and more recent interviews, the documentary tells the story of a group of California teenage surfer/skateboarders and their influence on the history of skateboarding (and to a lesser extent surfing) culture. The film is narrated by Sean Penn.
Financed by Vans as Peralta had a deal with them.

Original subcultures to contempary
 Style is more practical then gendered - long sleeves protective
No differentiation between male and females - long hair etc.

 Urban street skating as political statement 
something to do other than passively walk around the city scape
being in the city that is resisting the direction of the city it self
designed to walk through space in certain way - lead us to commercial space
skateboarding is a way of resisting and changing the urban space - redefinition of it
 substitute family - aspect of the movie
replace the conventions with new way of life
social interaction important - fractured family 
 Free running is a similar activity with the city
Parkour - Sporty element to it
free running is more arty - freedom of movement and pose 
 Subculture of the sport - story creates a group of superheroes in the Paris Ghetto

 most people who write about subculture are male
post theory addresses that issue a bit
over femininity - people read into it negativity - issues and sexual overtone

not true to the femininity of the time - girls are more of an add on then ride the bikes - sit on the back
not really part of subculture
 separates from other subcultures like mod
 extreme masculine and feminine 
neat and tidy - unthreating unlike biker subculture
fits better in to culture of parents - younger people fit into the normal routine of home and school
girls can have a status in the culture without being attached to a boy
working class had jobs which meant they had money to socialise
meant could have group identity 
 tensions between mods and rockers - bank holiday weekend culture

status within subculture results in factions who separate from original culture - mod to the skinhead and different factions in the skinheads
original and then those who try follow the trend
 hippy girl - middle class
type of experience comes out university 
space for leisure - find yourself
more likely to access to the space through education and travel
time for personal expression before you settle down

bad- rock and roll - own destruction
 underground punk in washington 
type of feminism possibly 
essentially its a music scene but the issues by the bands were things such as rape, sexuality etc
 less about the music but more about the protest
anti authoritarian 
 attitude and assertion of the female figure in the music industry
 pioneers of the alternative scene

political reactive situations - fanzines based around the issues they are reacting to
 reproduces the punk DIY aesthetics 
 be truly subcultural most be political in some way
important in the real world - give women a voice in the industry
 women used to be sidelined - they were quite revolutionary

elements of the culture are turn into commodity form
modes of dressed turned into mass produced clothing
original elements become part of the design 
 attempts to be neutralised by the media
punks and there mothers - really makes the punk subculture non threating represented unfairly
press set up to neutralise it that was threating the domestic 
objects associated to the subculture
transformed from practical object to piercing with it or clothes
diamond broach shown
 becomes subzoomed into fashion - show no cat walks


london riots - hoody becomes symbol of demonised part of culture
starts as protected clothing against weather
now part of group and unidentifiable in group

 developments of different modes of dress
meaning of the clothing as the context is changed
long frock clock - upper class to mass production and then being appropriated by the working class
 girls in the subculture - girls were small part of teddy boy culture
if the girls are on the street then they might get into trouble eg. pregnant


 skinhead culture - suggests it comes the subculture and deviants from it

 skinheads with there mum
 right as passage from journey of being young teen to young man

 skin style and the politics
film is effective in defining the difference
 ends with the scene of attack on milky
violence is triggered from inviting him around
can't get his head around of himself and someone else 
unifying effects of subculture - outside race
working class conflict - influenced by immigration
