Context of Practice: Study Task 1

10 key points:

  1. - were able to control and have influence in government which policies and rules are formed
  2. - boost the economy in capitalism in order to get profit, able to sell all the production of products by changing needs to wants
  3. - mass control of the people, easier to direct people towards areas of consumerism and idealisms
  4. - government scared of dangerous irrational instinct of humans and being overthrown as all these wars were demonstrating it happening elsewhere - products keep us docile and a sense of happiness from our purchasing
  5. - Berney was promoting multiple of his own clients through manipulation techniques in advertising, PR stunts
  6. - society has been manipulated into ideas and values that we live on today only in order to sell a product eg. engagement ring should be a diamond (Debeers campaign)
  7. - people behave irrationally because negitive ideals and lifestyle choices are promoted in a positive light with admirable emotions - there mind isn't in control anymore, there emotions are persuaded into actions that could actually do them damage, financially  or physically
  8. - it broke the taboo of not talking about your feelings with others and allowed people to be more publicly emotion about things
  9. - Freud didn't actually want his work to be used in this way and was highly against promoting himself in this celebrity culture - felt it was dangerous and he had underestimated the power of the human psychic
  10. - gender, status and sexuality are the areas of the human psychic to manipulate people into the consuming society through advertising

This is an old advert for Renault cars which demonstrates the nature of consumerism and desire led by our unconscious. This advert sells a lifestyle to the audience through the product. By purchasing the car it suggests that you will have a happy, attractive and perfect relationship with the ideals such as having a dog, a thriving social life, good weather. The end line translates to so right for young people which links to the unconscious in thinking that by purchasing this car you can be youthful, modern and fun. You are manipulated into wanting the lifestyle by societies ideals and morals of the family and the emotionally connected to the product through your unconscious which has been suppressed by your upbringing.
