My 5 images:
We identified a descriptive word with each picture about what we found athestically pleasing about them. Mine in order were:
- Technique
- Rustic colour
- Sleek
- Light
- Silhouette
We then got paired with someone else in our group and examined each others work seperatly. This was seperated into timed sessions of 5, 10 and then 20 seconds for each picture which was initially face down on the table. For the first timed session we wrote down the first word that came into our head, the second two words that came to our head and finally three words to make in total 6 words for each image.
I did find this quite difficult as i have such a lack of vocabulary and understanding in what i'm actually thinking about something however i did manage to get the 6 words just probably not fitting within the timed sessions.
My partner was Greg and for his five images my intial impressions were:
- mad, colour, collage, unk, layers and contrast
- line, simple, block, scale, print, fine
- colour, type, layout, neat, organised, sections
- space, illustration, illusion, type, colour, line
- structured, spacing, light, layout, style, crisp
We then met together and compared what the partners athestically pleasing word was with the six we'd found from the timed sessions to see if there were any similarities. Me and Greg did find a few however some of them were quite oppisite opinions just due to taste.
Next Jo aske to write down some life experiences we'd had that might of effected what we find athestically pleasing (seen on notes at the top). Mine mostly were holidays, music events and trips as they offer new and different representations of visuals then what we see day to day.
We then got set the task of life experiences we wanted to have in the future and again it was places i wanted to travel to that filled the majority of my brainstorm.
5 experiences before 2nd year that would change my athestic point of view:
- Go to Amsterdam
- Go to a music event
- Go out of the city to a new bit of countryside or beach
- Talk to a spiritual person on what they see visually
- See a shooting star
From the tasks we'd done so far we identified 5 words for a critera in which represented what we find athestically pleasing.
My criteria:
- Layout
- Style (print)
- Type
- Colour
- Line
We then got repartnered with different people and swapped criteria to source from the libary examples of design that best represented there criteria. This was a good way in which we could see if our criteria really did match our taste in athestics.
My partner was Ross and from his criteria i found two books:
'Information is Beautiful' David McCandless, 2009
'Mapping Graphic Navigational Systems' R. Fawcett-Tang, W.Owen, 2008
Both he said matched his criteria very well and he loved the designs in them, infact he actually owned one of the books himself.
I found this workshop quite useful today in finding out new vocabulary and challenging myself in pinpointing what i find athestically pleasing. Overall i think i still find a varied range of things visually pleasing but i no that within my work i want to create something innovative, with thought and purpose and for the design to reflect that throughout using the list of 5 things i pinpointed.
